Aphelandra squarrosa is part of the Acanthaceae family and is native to Mexico and Brazil. It has oval-shaped leaves, glossy green with white veins and midrib - this is why people call it the 'Zebra plant'. Leaf margins are entire and the plant produces yellow cone-shaped bracts where small flowers emerge.

Secrets to success
Temperature: 15-23ºC, no lower than 13ºC. Allow the plant to rest during winter, keep conditions cooler.
Light: Bright indirect light.
Watering: Keep soil moist to touch, use tepid water.
Air humidity: Higher humidity, ideally over 60% You can increase humidity by placing your plant on a tray of watered pebbles, grouping plants together, misting and using a humidifier.
Fertilising: Feed every 2-3 weeks during spring and summer.
Potting mix: A rich, well-draining mix.
