Consolea rubescens (syn. Opuntia rubescens) is part of the Cactaceae family and is native to Puerto Rico. It has flattened paddles (cladodes) and almost no spines, it is sometimes called 'Roadkill Cactus'. This species can grow up to 20 feet in it's home environment.

Secrets to success


Temperature: 21 °C.


Light: Full sun.


Watering: Water thoroughly during summer, ensuring the soil has completely dried out in between watering. Omit watering during autumn and winter.


Air humidity: Average to slightly higher humidity.


Fertilising: Use a cactus fertiliser bi-monthly which has been diluted to half the recommended strength during the growing season.


Potting mix: This plant is best grown in a sandy, well-draining mix containing perlite and horticultural sand. 


This plant is toxic, keep out of reach of pets and children.
