Espostoa melanostele is part of the Cactaceae family and is native to Peru. It is a grey-ish green columnar cactus with apical spination; the hoary pubescence covering the stem makes it robust and tolerant to full sun, as well as reflecting the light. Espostoa melanostele is very slow growing.
Pot: 6cm diameter.
Height: Approximately 10cm from base of pot.
Secrets to success
Temperature: Optimum temperature 24-26˚C but will be ok in average room temperature.
Light: Bright light and periods of direct sun. During winter move to a cool, bright spot to accomodate the plant during the dormancy period.
Watering: Water thoroughly when dry during spring and summer. Reduce watering in winter to encourage them to enter dormancy as they will etiolate (turn pale in colour) or become thin due to lower light levels.
Air humidity: Low humidity.
Fertilising: Feed monthly with a balanced fertiliser or a cactus fertiliser.
Potting mix: Use a well draining mix with perlite or pumice and minimal organic matter. Usually only requires repotting every couple of years.
This plant is non-toxic.
