Philodendron hastatum are part of the Araceae family and are native to Brazil. Philodendron hastatum are on the endangered species list due to habitat loss. This plant has long arrow-shaped leaves which are almost glossy with a blue-grey hue. This plant prefers to climb, so a trellis or moss pole would useful to aid growth.

How do you care for Philodendron hastatum?


Philodendrons thrive in warm temperatures, 18-23°C is ideal. Bright, indirect light is best but they're able to succeed in shadier conditions. Philodendron hastatum need a warm and humid environment. You can increase humidity by misting the leaves, grouping plants together or placing the plant on a tray of pebbles which are half-submerged in water. 


Allow the top two inches of the soil to dry out between waterings - always check the soil before watering. Feed Philodendrons with a balanced liquid houseplant fertiliser; water with fertiliser every month during the summer and every 6-8 weeks in autumn and winter. 


How do you propagate a Philodendron ‘Silver Sword’?


Propagate a Philodendron ‘Silver Sword’ in water by removing a 6-inch stem from the plant which has at least 2-3 nodes on it. Place the cutting in water and leave for up to a month in a warm place. After this time small white roots should appear at the cut ends of the stem and you’ll then be able to place the cutting in a pot with well-draining potting mix.
