Schlumbergera truncata is an epiphytic forest cactus from the Cactaceae family. It grows in coastal parts of south eastern Brazil. This plant has beautiful arching stems with flattened segments. Schlumbergera truncata are called 'Christmas Cactus' because of the time of year they bloom. The genus name honors Frederick Schlumberger, Belgian horticulturist.

Secrets to success

 

Temperature: Ideally 12-21°C but during resting period 10-12°C.

 

Light: Schlumbergera truncata grows best in light shade. Full sunlight is beneficial in midwinter, but bright sun during the summer months can make plants look pale and yellow. 

 

Watering: Water the growing medium when it is dry to the touch. S.truncata is tolerant of dry, slightly under-watered conditions.

 

Air humidity: This plant enjoys higher humidity, mist frequently, use a humidifier or group together with other plants.

 

November, December and January is the flowering period, water normally and maintain a minimum temperature of 12°C. February and March is the resting period, keep at 10-12°C. April and May water thoroughly when soil dries out. June-mid September temperatures 21-26°C. Mid September-mid November temperatures 12-18°C and 13 hours of darkness will aid development of buds.

 

This plant is toxic, keep out of reach of pets and children.
