Amydrium medium 'Silver' is a captivating climbing plant, highly valued for its unique, textured leaves in silvery blue-green shades. This cultivated variety of Amydrium medium features distinct foliage that develops deep splits or perforations as it matures, creating an intricate and sculptural appearance. Its shimmering leaves and vining habit make it a sought-after addition to indoor plant collections in the UK. It is a member of the Araceae family.
The genus name Amydrium comes from Greek, possibly hinting at features that are not always clear compared to other related plants. The specific epithet medium is Latin for "intermediate," potentially referring to its leaf development between juvenile and adult forms. 'Silver' is a cultivar name that describes the silvery-blue hue of its foliage.
Light: Amydrium medium 'Silver' thrives in bright conditions where the light is not direct. Strong, unshielded sunlight can harm its delicate leaves and might reduce the silver coloration. Insufficient light can result in slower growth and less defined leaf development. A bright spot near a window with filtered light in a typical UK home is suitable.
Water: Water moderately, allowing the potting mix to dry out slightly between watering sessions. During its active growing period in spring and summer, ensure the mix stays consistently moist but never waterlogged. Significantly reduce watering in autumn and winter when the plant is less active. Too much water is a common cause of root rot.
Soil: A well-draining, airy potting mix is essential. A specialist aroid mix, or a combination of potting compost with plenty of perlite and orchid bark, is ideal. This helps mimic its natural growing conditions and prevents water from sitting, which is vital, especially in the often damp UK climate.
Fertilising: Use a diluted, balanced liquid fertiliser every four to six weeks during the growing season (spring and summer). A feed made for aroids or general houseplants is appropriate. Reduce or stop fertilising during the cooler, less active months.
Temperature: This plant prefers warm temperatures, ideally between 18°C and 27°C (65°F and 80°F). It must be protected from cold air currents and sudden shifts in temperature, which can occur in UK homes during winter.
Humidity: Amydrium medium 'Silver' benefits from higher humidity levels, characteristic of its native rainforest home. While it can adapt to average indoor humidity in the UK, using a humidifier or placing the plant on a tray of pebbles with water can be very helpful, especially in drier indoor environments, like those with central heating.
Growth Habit: It has a semi-epiphytic, climbing growth pattern, with slender stems that will readily grow up a moss pole or trellis. Providing support encourages larger, more split leaves and more vigorous vertical growth.
Toxicity: Like many aroids, Amydrium medium 'Silver' is toxic if ingested by people or pets, as it contains calcium oxalate crystals. Keep it out of reach of children and animals.
