Begonia amphioxus is a truly unique and highly sought-after Begonia species, prized for its distinctive, narrowly lance-shaped leaves and unusual growth habit. This Begonia features elongated, often red-edged leaves that taper to a sharp point, frequently adorned with contrasting spots or markings. Its striking foliage and architectural form make it a fascinating addition to specialized indoor plant collections in the UK. It is a member of the Begoniaceae family.
The genus name Begonia honors Michel Bégon, a French patron of botany. Amphioxus comes from Greek words meaning "sharp at both ends," referring to the pointed shape of its leaves.
Light: Begonia amphioxus thrives in bright, indirect light. Strong, direct sunlight can scorch its delicate leaves, while insufficient light can lead to leggy growth and duller coloration. A spot near a bright window with filtered light in a UK home is ideal.
Water: Keep the potting mix consistently moist but never waterlogged. Allow the very top layer of the soil to dry slightly between waterings. Ensure excellent drainage to prevent root rot, which can be a common problem, especially in the UK's climate.
Soil: A well-draining, airy potting mix is essential. A specialist Begonia mix, or a blend of general potting compost with added perlite and orchid bark, will provide the necessary moisture retention and aeration.
Fertilising: Feed with a diluted balanced liquid fertiliser every two to four weeks during the active growing season (spring and summer). Reduce or stop fertilising during the autumn and winter months.
Temperature: This Begonia prefers warm and stable temperatures, ideally between 18-27°C (65-80°F). It is not frost-tolerant and must be protected from cold drafts and temperatures below 15°C (59°F), which can occur in UK homes during colder months.
Humidity: High humidity is crucial for Begonia amphioxus. It thrives in conditions of 70% humidity or higher. Using a humidifier, growing it in a terrarium, or placing the plant in a naturally humid room can help maintain optimal conditions, especially during drier indoor periods in the UK.
Growth Habit: It has an upright, somewhat shrubby growth habit. Its unique leaf shape and often reddish stems give it a distinct, almost alien appearance.
Toxicity: Begonias are toxic if ingested, so it's important to keep them away from pets and small children
