Useful Information

Plant Bio

Coleus 'Spacecake' is a visually striking foliage plant, valued for its vibrant and patterned leaves. This cultivar of Coleus features oval-shaped leaves with a unique combination of colors, often displaying a bright yellow or cream center that transitions into red and burgundy hues, edged with green. Its bold coloration and relatively straightforward care make it a popular choice for adding visual interest to indoor and outdoor spaces during the warmer months. It belongs to the Lamiaceae family.

The genus name Coleus is derived from a Greek word, referring to the way the stamens are joined. 'Spacecake' is a cultivar name likely chosen to reflect the plant's unique and eye-catching color patterns.

Light: Coleus 'Spacecake' grows best in bright light that is not direct. While it can handle some direct sun, especially in the morning or late afternoon, strong midday sun can be harmful to the leaves. Insufficient light can lead to less intense colors.

Water: The soil should be kept consistently moist but not saturated. Water when the top part of the soil feels dry to the touch. It's important to ensure the pot has good drainage, especially with Liverpool's variable weather.

Soil: A potting mix that drains well and is rich in organic matter is ideal. A general-purpose potting mix with added perlite can improve drainage.

Fertilising: Regular feeding with a diluted, balanced liquid fertilizer every two to four weeks during the active growing period (spring to early autumn) will help maintain the vivid leaf colors. Reduce or stop feeding during the cooler months.

Temperature: This plant prefers warm temperatures and is sensitive to frost. In the UK, it should be protected from temperatures below 10°C (50°F).

Humidity: While it can tolerate typical indoor humidity, it appreciates slightly higher levels. Occasional misting can be beneficial, particularly during dry periods indoors.

Growth Habit: Typically exhibits a bushy, upright growth pattern, reaching a height and spread of around 30-60cm. Regular pinching back of the growing tips can encourage a more compact and full shape.

Toxicity: Coleus 'Spacecake' has mild toxicity if eaten, potentially causing stomach upset in pets. It is best to keep it out of reach of curious animals and young children.
