Monstera lechleriana is part of the Araceae family and its native range is Panama to Venezuela and Bolivia where it grows as a climber and grows primarily in the wet tropical biome.

'Variegata' is the variegated version of the species, it has beautiful cream or pale green markings. While juvenile plants begin with solid foliage, they develop elongated fenestrations near the central vein as the plant climbs and matures. Monstera lechleriana has a vigorous climbing habit and uses its aerial roots to ascend trees.

Genus name is possibly from the Latin ‘monstrum’, meaning monster or ‘monstrifer’ meaning monster-bearing. The specific epithet honours the German botanist Willibald Lechler.

Light: Monstera lechleriana Variegata thrives in bright light that is not direct. Strong, direct sunlight can harm its leaves and potentially lessen the variegation, while insufficient light may result in slower growth and a reluctance to develop mature leaf forms. A position near a window with filtered light in a typical UK home is ideal. Variegated forms generally benefit from brighter conditions than their all-green counterparts to maintain their patterns.

Water: The potting mix should be kept consistently damp but not saturated. Allow the upper two to three centimetres of the soil to dry between waterings. Ensure the pot has excellent drainage to prevent root issues, which can be a common problem, especially in the UK's climate. Reduce watering in autumn and winter when the plant's growth naturally slows.

Soil: An airy and well-draining aroid potting mix is essential. A blend incorporating materials such as coco coir, perlite, and orchid bark, is often recommended to provide the necessary air circulation and drainage.

Fertilising: Use a diluted liquid fertiliser every two to four weeks during the active growing period in spring and summer. Reduce or stop fertilising during the autumn and winter months.

Temperature: This plant prefers warm temperatures, ideally between 20°C and 28°C. It should be shielded from cold draughts and sudden temperature changes, which can occur indoors, particularly during colder UK months. Temperatures below 15°C should be avoided as they can hinder growth and damage the plant.

Humidity: Higher humidity levels are highly beneficial for Monstera lechleriana Variegata, ideally between 60-80%. Consider using a humidifier or placing the plant on a pebble tray with water to maintain optimal conditions, particularly during drier indoor periods in the UK. This can also encourage aerial root development.

Growth Habit: This Monstera has a vining or climbing growth habit. It grows as a plant that starts in soil and climbs trees in its natural habitat. Providing a sturdy support such as a moss pole or trellis is crucial for encouraging larger, more developed leaves and vigorous vertical growth, including the formation of its characteristic perforations.

Toxicity: Like all Monsteras, this plant is toxic if consumed by humans or pets.

Returns

We guarantee our plants 14 day from receipt. We guarantee to send happy and healthy plants, however, it is your responsibility to care for them and we cannot be held responsible for neglect or mis care. Please send us a picture within 24 hours of receiving your plant and we'll help you out with your issue.

If returning your order, please keep all original packaging and use this to send the plant back to us. This will ensure the plant is kept as safe as possible on its return.

To allow the plant to acclimatise in its new home, there should be no repotting of the plant for a minimum of 14 days after receipt. If any plant has been repotted or a cutting has been taken then we are not able to accept returns.

We are happy to replace your plant if it is very badly damaged in transport. The loss of a leaf in transport on a healthy plant should not generally be cause for any concern. We cannot give a refund for snapped leaves.
