Peperomia argyreia was given its colloquial name of 'Watermelon' because of its physical resemblance to the fruit. This plant is native to South America, where it is grown for its attractive leaves. Peperomia argyreia only grows to an average height of 30cm tall, there is also a smaller variety of the plant that grows up to 15cm at its tallest.
How do you care for a Peperomia argyreia ‘Watermelon’?
Care for a Peperomia argyreia ‘Watermelon’ by keeping it in a room with a temperature between 18-24°C and average humidity. This plant can be prone to root rot if its soil gets water-logged. Allow the top of the soil to dry out between each watering. Alternatively, water this plant from its base.
How much light does a Peperomia argyreia ‘Watermelon’ need?
Peperomia argyreia ‘Watermelon’ needs indirect sunlight to grow and maintain its health. These plants are native to the rainforest habitats, often growing beneath the canopies of much larger trees. If they are subjected to direct sunlight, from a sunny windowsill, for example, their leaves may curl or become discoloured. Keep this plant away from sunny spots in your home, in a room that receives natural ambient light.
Can you grow Peperomia argyreia in water?
Peperomia argyreia should not be grown in water, we recommend keeping the plant in a pot with free-draining potting mix. If you wish to propagate with cuttings then this can be done in water, however, it may be easier to do so using a traditional pot and potting mix instead.
Do Peperomia argyreia like to be misted?
Mist your Peperomia argyreia to keep its environment humid. Mist more frequently during the winter when indoor heating may cause the air in the room to dry up. Alternatively, keep the plant on a watered tray of pebbles, ensuring that the base of the plant is kept above the waterline. This will create more humidity around the plant throughout the year.
