Philodendron Squamiferum x Serpens is prized for its captivating combination of features inherited from its parent plants. This specimen showcases dense, brush-like foliage, often heart-shaped, in a vibrant light green with a lustrous sheen. A particularly striking characteristic is its hairy leaf stems, which can exhibit hues ranging from red to pink. It belongs to the Araceae family.
The genus name Philodendron is derived from Greek, signifying "tree-loving," a nod to the plant's natural climbing habit. The epithet Squamiferum originates from Latin, meaning "scale-bearing," referencing the bristly petioles of one of its parent species. Serpens, also from Latin, translates to "snake," which may allude to its creeping growth pattern or the serpentine appearance of its petioles.
Light: Philodendron Squamiferum x Serpens flourishes in bright, indirect illumination. Intense, unfiltered sunlight can damage its leaves, while insufficient light may hinder its growth and lessen the vibrancy of its stem coloration. A location near a window offering filtered light is generally suitable for indoor cultivation.
Water: The growing medium should remain consistently moist but never waterlogged. Allow the top two to three centimetres of the soil to dry out before rewatering. Excellent drainage is crucial to prevent root issues. Reduce watering frequency during the autumn and winter months as the plant's growth naturally slows.
Soil: An airy and freely draining potting mix is essential. A specialized blend designed for aroids, incorporating components such as coco coir, perlite, and orchid bark, is frequently recommended to ensure proper air circulation and drainage.
Fertilising: Apply a diluted liquid fertiliser every four to six weeks during the active growth period in spring and summer. Decrease or cease fertilising during the cooler, darker months.
Temperature: This plant prefers warm conditions, ideally maintaining temperatures between 18°C and 26°C (64°F and 79°F). It should be protected from cold air currents and abrupt temperature shifts, which can occur indoors, particularly during the colder seasons. Temperatures below 16°C (60°F) should be avoided as they can impede its development.
Humidity: Elevated humidity levels are highly beneficial for Philodendron Squamiferum x Serpens, with an ideal range around 60% or higher. The hairs on its stems are known to absorb atmospheric moisture. Consider using a humidifier or placing the plant among other plants to help maintain optimal conditions, especially during drier indoor periods.
Growth Habit: This Philodendron exhibits a climbing growth pattern. Providing a sturdy support structure, such as a moss pole or trellis, is advisable to encourage larger leaf development and robust vertical growth. It will utilize its aerial roots to anchor itself to these supports.
Toxicity: Like other members of the Philodendron genus, this plant is toxic if ingested by humans or pets.
