Useful Information

Plant Bio

Pfeiffera monacantha is part of the Cactaceae family and it's native range is Bolivia to NW. Argentina. P. monacantha is considered a slow growing epiphytic cactus. Growth is spiny and erect, later becoming flattened.

It is often called mistletoe cactus or one-spined wickerware cactus, is a unique epiphytic succulent prized for its long, slender, and pendulous stems. This Pfeiffera species features vibrant green stems that can be somewhat flattened or three-angled, and it produces small, often orange, waxy flowers in spring. Its distinctive, cascading growth habit makes it a popular choice for hanging baskets and elevated displays, bringing a touch of tropical rainforest elegance to indoor spaces in the UK.

The genus name of Pfeiffera is in honour of Ludwig Karl Georg Pfeiffer (1805–1877), a German physician, botanist and conchologist. The specific epithet 'monacanthum' means “with one spine”, referring to the areoles which often bear only one spine.

Light: Pfeiffera monacantha thrives in bright, indirect light. While it can tolerate some lower light conditions, it will produce more flowers in brighter situations. Direct sunlight can scorch the stems. A spot a few feet away from a bright window in a UK home is often suitable.

Water: Water moderately, allowing the potting mix to dry out somewhat between waterings. During the active growing season (spring and summer), water more frequently, ensuring the mix is consistently moist but never waterlogged. Reduce watering significantly in autumn and winter when the plant is less active. Overwatering can lead to root rot.

Soil: A well-draining, airy potting mix is essential. A specialist epiphytic cactus mix or a blend of potting soil with plenty of perlite, orchid bark, and a small amount of sphagnum moss is ideal. This type of mix will help prevent water accumulation, which is crucial, especially in the often damp UK climate.

Fertilising: Feed with a diluted balanced liquid fertiliser every three to four weeks during the growing season (spring and summer). A fertiliser formulated for cacti or houseplants is suitable. Reduce or stop fertilising during the cooler, dormant months.

Temperature: Pfeiffera prefer warm temperatures, ideally between 18-27°C during the growing season. It should be protected from cold drafts and temperatures below 10°C, which can occur in UK homes during winter.

Humidity: Pfeiffera monacantha appreciates moderate to higher humidity levels, typical of its native rainforest habitat. While it can adapt to average indoor humidity in the UK, placing the plant on a pebble tray with water can be beneficial, particularly in drier indoor environments, especially with central heating.

Growth Habit: It has a pendulous or trailing growth habit, with long, slender stems that can cascade beautifully from containers. It is an epiphytic cactus, meaning it naturally grows on other plants in its environment.

Toxicity: Pfeiffera monacantha is generally considered non-toxic to humans and pets. However, it is always a good practice to prevent ingestion.
